No barrier bathroom

No barrier bathroom
A bathroom is a place where everyone would like to keep intimacy, despite having problems with walking, or needing to be looked after. These problems concern a few percent of our society- fortunately they can be solved. Thanks to proper planning and equipping the bathroom the elderly. less able people, people using a wheel chair or the disabled in any other way, can use the bathroom themselves.

Manoeuvring space
Most problems in the bathroom are caused by limited space, which makes it difficult to use it for the disabled. A proper manoeuvring space is essential for the freedom of movement and easy access to sanitation appliances- allowing to make a full circle with a wheel chair (about 1.5m in diameter).

Arranging the appliances
When planning a bathroom for a disabled person we have to remember about keeping:
- a proper space between bathroom appliances,
- a minimum manoeuvring space in the middle of the room.
A bathroom for a disabled person should be equipped with handles- by the bath tub and the toilet, as well as the wash basin and the shower. All parts of the electric equipment should be low enough (40 to 140 cm above the floor) so that they are easy to reach for a person on a wheel chair. Bathroom door should open outwards.

A special wash basin
A wash basin for a disabled person should allow to wash hands while sitting- those wash basins have a specially constructed water-seal. Handles should be placed on both sides of the wash basin in order to make washing hands easier.

We shouldn`t put a socle or a half socle under the wash basin because it will be easier to get to it on the wheel chair.

A comfortable toilet
The height of the bathroom furnishings on which a disabled person sits (a toilet, a bidet or a bench) should be almost the as the wheel chair height (about 50 cm). A toilet seat should be the wheel chair height and its length ought to allow to sit on it comfortably. Special flexible handles will make it easier for a disabled person to sit on a toilet from the wheel chair. Thanks to those flexible elements someone can get on the toilet and put the wheel chair next to it.
To get a proper height of the toilet we can install an extra socle which is attached to the wall (hanging models), or we can use a special rest.

A safe bath
Using a bath tub will become easier when we install a special bench on the height of the bath top. A disabled person will be able to easily get onto it from a wheel chair. A shower for a disabled person ought to be a deepen open space, surrounded by special door or a curtain; and it should have proper dimensions (1x1m). The shower floor should go down towards the drainage. In this kind of shower we can put a special bench or chair. Those special appliances enable a disabled person to use a shower in a sitting position. Special handles make it easier to use a shower.

No barrier bathroom
There are especially designed bathroom appliances for the disabled- Nova Top No Barriers, and special accessories by Lehnen. Those companies have in their offer wash basins designed to be used by someone on a wheel chair; toilets which can be used by the disabled themselves; and accessories which increase the comfort because of handles, rests and other facilities.
